Lunch Break Roundup

Minnesota legislators respond to a proposed HHS rules change that would alter the definition of abortion to comprise most kinds of birth control. Last year, the Minnesota legislature approved a bill that would require medical facilities to offer Plan B (or other emergency contraception) to all rape victims treated there.

McCain says Obama is "playing the race card", which apparently means "pointing out that there has never been a president of color".

Members of Congress heard yesterday about the horrifying frequence of sexual assualt in the military. In 2007, more than 2,200 sexual assaults were reported. Only 181 were prosecuted. That's 8%, versus about 40% in the civilian world.

There was a plane crash in my hometown of Owatonna, Minnesota, yesterday, in which at least 8 passengers--customers of local glass producer Viracon--were killed.

Slightly old news, but Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) is pleading not guilty to charges that he took and misrepresented illegal donations. In related news, he is getting respectably outpolled by his opponent, Mark Begich.

So much word about Team McCain's slam to Obama of "playing the race card." It's not exploiting race unfairly if it's very relevant and true.
